Maharashtra CM meets Rohit Sharma, wishes him well after Test retirement

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Rohit Sharma at the Varsha bungalow, the official residence of the Chief Minister in Mumbai, to personally congratulate him on his retirement from Test cricket. Fadnavis lauded Sharma for his illustrious career that lasted 14 years from 2011 to 2025.

The meeting underscored the state’s appreciation for Sharma’s dedication and impact on the sport. Fadnavis shared a couple of pictures of his meeting with Rohit.

The Maharashtra CM wrote, “It was great to welcome, meet and interact with Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma at my official residence Varsha. I extended my best wishes to him on his retirement from Test cricket and for continued success in the next chapter of his journey!”

On May 7, the 38-year-old Rohit announced his decision to move away from the purest format of the game. Having also retired from T20Is last year, Rohit only remains an active cricketer in ODIs for India. The veteran dropped a post via his Instagram story to put forth his decision.

Rohit wrote, “Hello everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

Rohit didn’t have the best of times in India’s recent tour of Australia where he scored only 36 runs from three Tests. He also dropped himself for the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

In 67 Tests, Rohit scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.57 with 12 hundreds and 18 fifties. His top score of 212 came against South Africa back in 2019 at the JSCA International Cricket Complex in Ranchi.

With Rohit retiring, India are in with a stiff task of naming a new captain for their upcoming five-match Test series against England.
