Israel, Iran escalate attacks on Day 5 of conflict, Trump proposes ceasefire

The conflict between Israel and Iran bore no signs of waning as it entered its fifth day, with both sides continuing to pound each other. Casualties are mounting, with at least 24 people reportedly killed in Israel and 224 in Iran.

While Israel’s strikes have hit Iran’s strategic locations — including missile storage bunkers, launchers, and nuclear facilities — and killed top security and intelligence officials, both sides have caused significant damage to civilians in major cities such as Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem in Israel, and Tehran in Iran, as missiles struck residential areas.

Meanwhile, French President Emannuel Macron has claimed that US President Donald Trump has offered to broker a truce between Israel and Iran.

Here are the latest developments

  • US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told Fox News that Trump is keen on getting Iran to the negotiating table when it comes to striking a nuclear deal. The sixth round of talks between the US and Iran were called off on Sunday after Israel launched a scathing attack on Friday.

  • Macron said that Trump is aiming at brokering a peace deal between Iran and Israel. “There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange. An offer was made especially to get a ceasefire and to then kick-start broader discussions,” he told reporters at the G7 Summit.

  • Axios reported that Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are likely to meet to discuss the nuclear deal and an end to the conflict.

  • As Iran-Israel tensions showed no signs of easing, US President Donald Trump cut short his G7 trip to Canada and instructed his national security advisors to be ready in the Situation Room upon his return.

  • Hours after Donald Trump asked everyone to leave Tehran immediately on his Truth Social platform, large explosions were heard in Iran’s capital city early on Tuesday. According to Iranian media outlets, three locations in northeast Tehran have been hit by Israeli projectiles, with plumes of smoke seen rising.
