Concerns rise as HMPV cases surge in China

China is witnessing a rise in respiratory illnesses, with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) emerging as a significant pathogen.

Although no official state of emergency has been declared, the country’s health authorities have implemented protocols to address unknown pathogens since December 2024.

According to a Reuters report, the surge in respiratory infections—caused by influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Covid-19, and now HMPV—has raised alarms.
