Hazardous spill at LG Energy Solutions in Holland leaves 15 workers hospitalised

A chemical spill at LG Energy Solutions in Holland, Michigan, resulted in several hospitalisations on Saturday afternoon. The Holland Fire Department (HFD) stated crews were sent around 3:25 pm after they received notification of a “hazardous materials incident” within the building.

Upon arrival of the fire crews, they verified a chemical spill inside the plant. Responders immediately initiated hazardous material’s response protocols, closed the area, and laboured to safeguard employees and the surrounding community. Specialised units were summoned to take charge and start the cleanup.

As reported by Wzzm13, the fire department verified 15 people were taken to area hospitals for medical treatment and examination.

Authorities clarified that the spill did not spread outside the facility and did not present any risk to people. Cleanup crew members stayed on the premises until they ensured that the work environment was safe to work in again.

“The situation was handled in accordance with hazardous materials standards, and there is no ongoing risk to surrounding residents,” the HFD announced in a release.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

The authorities launched a probe to understand the cause of the incident and ensure it does not happen again. LG Energy Solution said it is cooperating completely with emergency responders and environmental safety authorities throughout the investigation.

RECENT SAFETY ISSUES

This latest incident follows a tragic event just over a month ago, when a plant worker died after he became wedged in a machine. That incident raised questions about workplace safety protocols at the plant, which is a large employer in the area.

With two major workplace safety incidents in a short period, the safety procedures at LG Energy Solutions are being questioned. Authorities have not released information regarding the nature of the chemical used in Saturday’s spill.
