The rankings, released by Quacquarelli Symonds on June 18, 2025, assessed over 1,500 universities across 106 locations, making this edition the most comprehensive to date.Imperial College London emerged as the second-best university globally, marking a significant rise in its standing. The London-based institution scored an impressive 99.4 out of 100, placing it ahead of traditionally dominant names like Stanford University, Harvard University, and the University of Oxford. These rankings reflect shifting dynamics in global higher education, highlighting regional trends and institutional developments worldwide.A changing academic landscapeThis year’s rankings underscore the growing influence of Asian universities, with the region now boasting 565 ranked institutions—more than Europe (487), the Americas (358), Africa (47), and Oceania (44). According to Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President, the results represent “a shifting centre of gravity in higher education,” as Asian countries continue to invest heavily in research, internationalisation, and long-term strategy.Notably, Sunway University in Malaysia recorded the most significant improvement, climbing over 120 places in the rankings. Meanwhile, India saw notable movement with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi becoming the highest-ranked Indian institution at 123rd place, overtaking IIT Bombay, which now sits at 129th.
