S Jaishankar meets Chinese counterpart in South Africa, discusses bilateral ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday met his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Africa’s Johannesburg. Jaishankar is currently on a two-day visit to the African nation to participate in the high-level discussions.

Sharing photos from the meeting on X, Jaishankar said, “The G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Johannesburg provided an opportunity to meet CPC (Communist Party of China) Politburo member and FM Wang Yi of China this morning on its sidelines”.

The meeting comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between India and China to address bilateral concerns and regional challenges.

On Thursday, addressing the G20 session titled ‘Discussion on the Global Geopolitical Situation’, Jaishankar pointed out that there must be no room for coercion, and, in a push for plurilateralism, he stressed that the global agenda cannot be narrowed down to the interests of a few.

“Member nations must also recognise that multilateralism itself lies deeply damaged and that the UN and its Security Council are often grid-locked”, news agency PTI quoted the minister as saying.

“The global geopolitical situation remains difficult by any definition. Some of them are the accumulated challenges of the Covid pandemic, conflict situations, financial pressures, food security and climate concerns,” he added.

Apart from Wang Yi, Jaishankar also engaged in discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Their talks focused on the Ukraine conflict and the crisis in the Middle East, where Jaishankar emphasised the importance of humanitarian aid and reiterated India’s support for a two-state solution to achieve lasting peace.

The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting serves as a critical platform for India to enhance its diplomatic outreach with G20 nations and the Global South. In light of the prevailing global uncertainties, the 2025 G20 FMM is expected to play a key role in fostering diplomatic dialogue and strategic cooperation among the world’s major economies.
