Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar celebrates his 76th birthday today. Widely regarded as one of the finest batters to ever play the game, Gavaskar’s achievements laid the foundation for India’s rise in world cricket. The former India captain played 233 international matches and scored 13,214 runs, including 35 centuries. He became the first player in history to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket, setting a benchmark for future generations. His consistency and courage against the world’s best fast bowlers earned him global respect. Gavaskar announced his arrival with a stunning debut Test series against the West Indies in 1971, scoring 774 runs. That remains the most runs ever scored by a batter in their debut Test series.
