Trump vows to release John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr assassination files

US President-elect Donald Trump said that he would release classified documents in the upcoming days linked to the assassinations of former US president John F Kennedy, Senator Robert Kennedy and civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.

“In the coming days, we are going to make public remaining records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other topics of great public interest,” Trump was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters at the Make America Great Again (MAGA) ‘victory rally’ at the Capital One Arena in Washington DC.

However, Trump did not specify which documents would be released, and he did not promise a blanket declassification.

Notably, Trump had released 2,800 documents related to JFK’s assassination during his previous term as the President. But he had yielded to pressure from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and blocked the release of several other files, citing national security concerns.

During his campaign for the elections, Trump had promised that he would release classified intelligence and law enforcement files on the 1963 assassination of John F Kennedy.

The assassination of John F Kennedy has long been surrounded by widespread conspiracy theories in the US. While the Justice Department and other federal agencies maintain that Kennedy was killed by a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, polls show that a significant number of Americans believe the assassination was part of a larger conspiracy.
