US President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs ranging from 10% to 41% on imports from dozens of countries, with Syria, Laos and Myanmar bearing the maximum brunt. As announced earlier, imports from India will now be taxed at 25%, while its neighbours Pakistan and Bangladesh will face reduced levies of 19% and 20% respectively.
Tariffs on Canadian goods imported to the United States have been hiked from 25% to 35% amid escalating trade tensions with the Mike Carney-led administration and Trump’s charge that the country has failed to curb the flow of illicit drugs.
Some of the world’s poorest and war-torn countries were hit with punitive levies. Syria, which is struggling to recover from its 14-year civil war, leads with a new tariff rate of 41%. Imports from Laos and Myanmar will be taxed at 40%. Libya and Iraq face tariffs of 30% and 35% respectively.
The small African country of Lesotho, which was slapped with a 50% tariff in April, now faces a reduced rate of 15%.
The tariffs will come into effect in seven days’ time, the White House said.
