India batter Shubman Gill overtook Babar Azam to become the world No.1 batter in the ICC ODI rankings. On Wednesday, February 19, Shubman became the top ranked batter owing to a sensational performance in the 3-match series against England.
Shubman’s rise to the top rank amongst ODI batters comes right before the Champions Trophy 2025. India would be hoping that the youngster continues to deliver in the 50-over format. Recently, India head coach Gautam Gambhir had spoken highly of Shubman. Gambhir had said that the batter’s recent elevation to the vice-captain’s position has helped him with consistency.

Shubman is in rich form coming into the Champions Trophy 2025. Playing a 3-match series against England, Shubman scored one hundred and two fifties and finished with a total of 259 runs at an average of 86.33.
The India batter had closed in on Babar Azam last week and was just 5 points away from the former Pakistan captain. On February 19, Babar dropped 13 points, while Shubman went up by 15. The young Indian batter now has 796 points to his name, while Babar has 776.
There are a total of four Indian batters in the top 10 of the ODI batter’s rankings. Shubman Gill is followed by Rohit Sharma (3), Virat Kohli (6) and Shreyas Iyer (9).
